Overview
Who should attend
Successful completion of this module will benefit those working in asbestos consultancy as well as in mainstream occupational hygiene, giving an understanding of the health risks associated with asbestos and other fibres as well as the means of evaluation and control.
This qualification is suitable for
- Asbestos consultants.
- Asbestos laboratory UKAS quality/technical managers.
- Directors of asbestos companies.
- Occupational hygienists.
- Managers of asbestos teams (lab/surveying).
Entry Requirements
Candidates should have an awareness of the contents of the following:
- HSG248 Asbestos: The analysts’ guide (2021 2nd edition)
- HSG264 ‘Asbestos: the survey guide’ (2012)
These documents will be provided to candidates who book on the course with us, however, they are available individually as free pdf downloads from the ‘resources’ section of the HSE website https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/.
Candidates also need basic literacy and numeracy skills. Some candidates may require a calculator for part of the course.
Teaching Learning Time
The course can be delivered more flexibly, such as on one day per week for five weeks, but should still include 45 hours of teaching.

Assessment and Examination
Please be aware that ALL examinations are conducted online through Microsoft Teams and BOHS exam portal.
Candidates are required to pass two mandatory components in order to be awarded the BOHS M504 qualification:
- Formative Practical Assessment (open book)
- Written Theory (WT) examination (open book)
The WT exam comprises of 40 short-answer questions to be answered in an 2 hours. The pass mark is 60%. This is an open-book exam.
The Formative Practical Assessment enables candidates to demonstrate their basic skill and how to apply their knowledge to real life situations such as air sampling and the preparation of slides ready for fibre counting, and the sampling ACMs safely.
To gain the BOHS M504 qualification, candidates have to gain a pass in both parts within 12 months of the original exam date.
Resits of any part are permitted.
