The BOHS was formed in 1953, merged in April 2003 with the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists (BIOH), and is by far the biggest hygiene society in Europe.
The Faculty of Occupational Hygiene plays a vital role in developing and maintaining the professional standards of hygienists, and is recognised internationally as a major professional examination and qualification body.
BOHS is a founding member of the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) which provides an international voice for the occupational hygiene profession.
The BOHS are also an integral member of the Professional Organisations in Occupational Safety and Health grouping, which works towards common aims through joint initiatives and reciprocal support, and they have strong alliances with other health and safety organisations, the HSE, trade unions and business.
BOHS’ professional qualifications have been well regarded in the occupational hygiene field since their introduction in May 1969, with over 20,000 successful candidates to date.
The BOHS work closely with regulators and practitioners to ensure that our syllabi and examinations are up-to-date and relevant. Thirteen of the BOHS qualifications are currently listed in HSE guidance as being the industry standard for their particular subject.
The creation of a syllabus and examination process for any subject is complex and involves many stages to ensure the quality and integrity of the system.
The BOHS systems have been in existence for many years and are subject to a continuous review process that includes the use of many independent experts, to ensure the maintenance and improvement of all subjects. |
